• Sex is everywhere in the media, and so you can be convinced that teens today are always at the "connection". But the new federal research says it's not.

Instead, the study found that most teens in high school are not sexually active.

"The myth is that every child in high school has sex, and not true," a professor of pediatrics at the Seattle Children's Hospital, who reviewed the findings.

"It is less than half, and has been less than half of the more than 10 years," he said.

The study found that only 42 percent of girls and 44 percent of children aged 15-19 reported having sex at least once. And Breuner said he found something new. Returning to 2002, less than half of older teenagers told investigators who are sexually active, according to federal data.

Plus, most teens who choose to go all the way up to lose their virginity to someone you frequent, the survey shows.

Three of the four girls said they "stood firm" with their first sexual partner, and just over half of the children said the same. In comparison, only 2 percent of girls and 7 percent of children said they lost their virginity with someone they had just met.

"There is a myth that children indulge a little and have sex with someone who literally just met relationships," Breuner said. "This dissipates the myth that our teenagers have sex with people who do not know."

The statistics come from in-person interviews with more than 4,000 adolescents in the US between 2011 and 2015. The survey was funded by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Breuner believe that HIV is the main reason why teenagers think twice before having sex these days.

In 1988, 51 per cent of girls and 60 per cent of children between the ages of 15 and 19 said they were sexually active, but these figures have fallen to current levels after the spread of a sexually transmitted disease that could kill,

Adolescents also appear to be more aware of the long-term consequences of pregnancy, said lead researcher Joyce Abma, a statistician at the National Center for Health Statistics in the United States.

About 89 percent of teenage girls and 80 percent of teenage boys said they would be angry if the sex leading to pregnancy, according to the survey. In comparison, only 11 percent of girls and 20 percent of children said they would be satisfied if this happened.

Sexually active adolescents are more likely to use protection these days. Nine out of 10 teenagers reported using a contraceptive method the last time they had sex, compared with 83 percent of teenagers in 2002.

"This is a fairly significant increase, and that has not stabilized as we have seen with sexual experience," said Abma.

Condoms are the most commonly used method of contraception among teenagers, with 56 percent of teenagers reported using one during their last sexual encounter.

About 31 percent of girls are on the pill, and about 13 percent say they use another form of hormonal contraception. About 22 percent used a condom and hormonal contraception when they had sex for the last time.

Contraception is probably more widely used because teenagers have better access, said Breuner. In many areas, children can get birth control without having to involve their parents.

"This comes through funds for organizations that provide confidential teenagers who are sexually active contraception,"  Breuner. "When cash flows are extracted from these organizations, we are back in the '80s again," in terms of unprotected sex on a large scale.

In particular, emergency contraception is more widely used among teenagers these days, according to the survey. About 23 per cent of sexually active adolescents reported using emergency contraception at least once, compared with 8 per cent in 2002.
