One in four women who had had an abortion in 2016 using the most reliable methods of contraception, said the British Pregnancy Advisory Service.

More than 14,000 women who were treated at BPAS clinics have become pregnant despite using the pill or a long-acting contraceptive.

But long-acting reversible methods have very low failure rate (99% efficacy).

Birth control pills are by far the most popular way to protect against unwanted pregnancies among women, but methods for a long life - known to be LARCs - are related.

They include contraceptive injections, implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs) or systems (IUS).

Birth control pills are estimated at 91% efficiency, while condoms are effective at 82% when they are generally used.

However, BPA's indicate that unplanned pregnancies can occur if the method is not inserted correctly or if it moves or flows.

He also said that hormonal contraception like the pill or patch, can mask pregnancy symptoms because it can cause irregular or mild periods.

That may be the reason why women who use these methods have abortions at a later stage than other women.

BPA's says that in 2015, more than 5% of women who had abortions in the 20 weeks using LARCs, compared to approximately 3% of those who had less than 19 weeks.

Ann Furedi, CEO BPA's, said: Our data show that women can not control their fertility through contraception alone even if they use some of the most effective methods.

"Family planning is contraception and abortion.

"Abortion is a method of contraception that women need when their usual method allows them to come down."

Of 60,000 women who had an abortion at BPAS clinics last year, more than half use at least one contraceptive method.

The total number of abortions in England and Wales was approximately 185,500 during each of the last years.

Each year, nine out of 100 women who use the pill, six out of 100 using injection and 100 using the IUD gets pregnant.

Abortions in Northern Ireland are allowed if a woman's life is at risk or if there is a permanent or serious risk to her physical or mental health.

The FPA sexual health charity said that people do not always use contraception consistently or correctly.

She also said that some of the most effective contraceptive methods were not always as available as possible.

"In a survey of general practitioners, it was found that one-fifth did not provide the intrauterine device (IUD), and almost a quarter said they did not offer the contraceptive implant," he said the FPA.

Doctors told the FPA that this is due, in part, to the lack of training qualifications and lack of funding.

But the NICE (National Institutes of Health and Excellence Care) guide suggests that long-acting contraceptive methods can reduce unwanted pregnancies and be cost-effective for the NHS.
